Back To The Future For Entrepreneurs

It was a movie that really brought the entrepreneurial spirit up within me. When Michael J. Fox playing the role of Marty McFly went for a ride in that DeLorean (speaking of an entrepreneur) to the past in the movie Back To The Future.

I was thinking back on that movie which was released before some of you reading this were even born… 1985.

I started thinking about how, in many ways, we entrepreneurs are jumping in our DeLoreans and traveling back in time while creating the future.

Now please don’t think I have suddenly lost my mind

Or am smoking something…

It will all make sense if you just read the whole post.

It all began with entrepreneurs

If you really consider every possibility of beginnings, and I am not writing this to start any kind of debate over beginnings. Whether it started 2,000, 4,000 or even 100,000 years ago… humans started with an entrepreneur.

After all, who could that person have called an employer? Who would have paid him wages? How did he eat, sleep, bathe, etc?

He had to create on the way back to the future

And, to be clear here, I am saying he but maybe it was she. Either way, I am talking about a human who had to solve a problem and the only way to do that was to create. And as he/she met other humans, they could barter or trade creations between them.

They were entrepreneurs

There is no debating that fact. While today’s definition says an entrepreneur is someone who starts and manages a business, I would have to take that much deeper and say an entrepreneur is someone who creates and finds a means to make that creation satisfy his needs financially, materially or physically.

As time moved forward (or back to the future)

As time proceeded to move forward and populations grew, there were classes of people that were not entrepreneurs but instead worked for the entrepreneurs.

But there were still a large supply of entrepreneurs, and many did not hire workers.

There were:

  • Blacksmiths
  • Bakers
  • Barbers
  • Farmers
  • etc…

All of these were entrepreneurs. They created and sold their creations to the highest bidders.

The birth of the United States – back to the future

When the United States was birthed, nearly everyone within this land was an entrepreneur of one type or another. Yes, there were a few employees, but many of those people even had entrepreneurial dreams that they worked with when they were not working for another entrepreneur.

And then we went to…

Future to the back? Industrial Revolution

Did not anyone see that this may be taking us away from our back to the future dreams?

Humans all congregated in urban zones. Many had no inspiration to take any risk. Many humans stopped creating and began just working for large corporations and being followers instead of leaders.

The amount of entrepreneurs dropped to levels that were unacceptable.

I say unacceptable because I truly believed that damaged our economy in massive ways. I believe it was a major reason we had the Depression.

Our Back to the Future took some weird turns

We have seen some oddities that have seemed normal to many people, but I believe it was extremely out of human nature:

  • The homemaker syndrome when men went off to their jobs as the wife stayed home and took care of the children. Not really odd if the husband was an entrepreneur managing a business, but a risk working for a manufacturer.
  • The rise of service industry and a boom in Superstores like Walmart, Kmart, Target and more. These drove entrepreneurs even lower on the sustainability scale.
  • And then the technology industry took over. Some entrepreneurs took advantage of this, but the technology industry also drove those who were not creative into deep stress. Technology was taking their jobs.

It all began to falter terribly in the late 2000’s

We watched as large corporations began laying off workers and some even sought government assistance because they were deep in debt. Humans were now in a position where they would have to find a way to feed their families and pay their bills.

There suddenly was a rise of websites where people could freelance their skills and talents.

Creativity was back on the rise.

We ARE going back to the future

I truly believe this is where we are supposed to be. There needs to be an abundance of entrepreneurs to create and guide our future.

Yes, we will always need people who manually work, but the percentages need to be more like they were when humans began traveling in covered wagons to search for gold here in California.

So if you are taking that chance… If you are dreaming the dream… If you are becoming or are an entrepreneur, I commend you.

It is through entrepreneurs that our children WILL have a future, so thank you

How To Be A More Productive Entrepreneur

Are you as productive as you could be?

I’m not… The fact is, we all can find ways to be a more productive entrepreneur.

The key is: wanting to be more productive. And I would say that you fit that mold, otherwise you would not be here reading this blog post.

Everyday, I am looking for methods to add productivity. I have decided to share with all of you some of the tips I have learned from other successful entrepreneurs.

Use them because they work!

Be a more productive entrepreneur with sleep

Trying to manage an entrepreneurship with 4 or 5 hours of sleep is not wise. You may do okay for a little while, but you will find yourself drained and not managing your business in the most competent manner.

It is important that we get proper sleep. And, having a steady sleep schedule is the best method. Go to sleep 7 days of the week at approximately the same time and arise at the same time.

Have a comfortable sleeping environment and you will be much more productive,

Be a more productive entrepreneur by eating breakfast

eat breakfast for productivity

Yes, there is a lot to do and a short time to do it. But taking the time to eat a healthy breakfast will provide you with the energy you need to properly get all the tasks done.

No, that 8 gallon cup of coffee does not count as breakfast.

I suggest some oatmeal, fruit, eggs and bacon… Just have a good breakfast to start your day in a productive way.

Be a more productive entrepreneur by setting goals

When we set goals, we have something to shoot for. Set them high but reachable.

I suggest setting daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual goals.

And something that not too many people mention – write down objectives you need to have to be able to reach those goals.

Be a more productive entrepreneur by planning

Every wise entrepreneur makes a plan and foolish entrepreneurs fly by their shoelaces,

There is an old statement that says: Failing to plan is planning to fail.

It is a good idea before you go to bed each night that you write down the plan for the following day.

Be a more productive entrepreneur by eating the frog

This line came from the great Mark Twain; he essentially said that if your job is to eat a frog, you should do it first thing in the morning.

What that means to us entrepreneurs is that we should grab the worst task of all first thing and tackle it. Pretend that task is an ugly frog you just pulled from the pond and gulp it down. Get it done right away and all the other tasks will seem like ice cream to wash the frog down.

Be a more productive entrepreneur by delegating or outsourcing

Sometimes it is easy to get so caught up in our business that we think we need to do everything ourselves. Is that truly being productive?

There are many tasks and jobs that can be done by employees, virtual assistants or freelancers. It only makes good sense to take advantage of any opportunities to have someone else do tasks that need to be completed.

Be a more productive entrepreneur by completing a task before checking email

Our emails can consume time and energy. I have discovered that somewhat like eating the frog, it is a good idea first thing to complete a task before checking your email.

Email can be time consuming, so by completing one task, you have achieved something for the production before doing something that is seemingly unproductive.

I also suggest you then do another task before checking social media.

Be a more productive entrepreneur by reading

Reading is good for the soul. The more you learn, the more productive you will be. When you read, you learn. So find books that are related to business or the niche you are in and schedule at least ½ hour each day to read.

Be a more productive entrepreneur by not multitasking

Some of you may have the notion to debate with me on this, but studies have shown that people who multitask are less productive than the person who completes one task at a time. This article from the APA explains how multitasking can actually be damaging to your brain.

Be a more productive entrepreneur with exercise

Starting your day off with some brisk exercise is a good way to get all your blood flowing. It does work in helping you take care of the entrepreneur tasks you have. So,

  • Jog
  • Walk
  • Ride your bike
  • Pushups
  • Pull ups
  • Lift weights

Just exercise and you will be more productive.

Be a more productive entrepreneur by asking questions

Asking questions helps you understand the subject matter in a more accurate way and you will naturally be more productive because you will have a more comprehensive understanding.

This is, as long as you follow the next tip.

Be a more productive entrepreneur by listening

You can learn a lot more when you listen than when you are talking. I believe this is why we have 2 ears and only 1 mouth.

Be a more productive entrepreneur by taking time for yourself and your family

While an entrepreneur’s work-life balance is usually chaotic, we must be aware of this and schedule time completely away from the work and be with yourself, and spend quality time with your family.

You will be more productive by doing so. Your family will support you more and you will love what you are doing.

Lastly, be a more productive entrepreneur by…

Using the Expense Tracker.

This application I developed has helped many entrepreneurs get control of their finances. It has helped them become more productive because they take the financial “stress pressure” away so they can focus on the productive tasks.

I am so sure it will help you so I am offering a no-obligation 7 day trial so you can see how it can help you be more productive.

The Top 8 Challenges You Will Face As A New Entrepreneur

Life is full of challenges and how we handle those challenges define us. As we enter the entrepreneur world, we will find new challenges. How we face and deal with those challenges will determine our odds of being successful.

I believe that every human who is considering entering the entrepreneurship world should know the challenges they will meet before they start. By doing so, there will be no surprises. The entrepreneur will be less apt to panic and will handle the challenge in a competent way.

Here are the top 8 challenges you may encounter as a new entrepreneur.

Top Entrepreneur Challenges #1: Cash Flow

I believe every entrepreneur has been in or near panic mode when this challenge meets them face-to-face. We send an invoice and the client takes their sweet time in sending the payment. We invested in tools and resources to complete the job and the bank account is reading empty.

The only way to solve this is through proper budgeting.

Several years ago, I developed a tool that can help you immensely. I highly recommend you consider using The Expense Tracker. I know it can help you keep control of your cash flow.

Top Entrepreneur Challenges #2: Leaving A Safe Career

Maybe the boss is not one of our favorite people. The work is monotonous, but the paycheck is always there. You spent several years in school to have these qualifications and now you are considering leaving it all to follow a dream.

I believe at least 90% of entrepreneurs have had this dilemma, but following the dream is how many entrepreneurs have changed the world.

You just need to ask yourself if it is more important that you just go through life in delirium or you wake up and live your dream?

Top Entrepreneur Challenges #3: Finding Customers

Every single business faces this challenge. It is the key to managing any business because without customers, you really do not have a business.

We talk about this challenge on this blog from time to time. Be sure and read other posts.

There are some major things you need to achieve to attract customers:

  • Are you solving their problem?
  • Are you marketing to your target market?
  • Are you pricing your product or service properly?
  • Are you staying ahead of the competitor?

This challenge will be there forever as long as you are an entrepreneur. Accept the challenge and embrace it.

Top Entrepreneur Challenges #4: Negative Influences

This is a huge challenge that new entrepreneurs run up against. Those people in our lives that are always using words like:

  • Can’t
  • Shouldn’t
  • Don’t
  • Won’t
  • Etc…

The negative will wear on you if you allow it too.

There are 2 ways I suggest you meet this challenge:

  1. Rebel against it – Without causing dissension, just make an inner decision that you will “show them,” and proceed to do it.
  2. Keep clear of them – I suggest you try to maintain distance from the people who are feeding these negatives. When you are unable to stay clear, always respond with positives.

Top Entrepreneur Challenges #5: Time Management

This is a challenge that we all face and there is only one good way to meet this challenge. Just make a plan. I suggest each evening, you plan your next day. Write down your goals, the tasks that need to be completed and put them in an order that makes sense.

I suggest completing the hardest tasks first because you will feel power knowing you are solving the most difficult stuff and you will “fly” through the easy tasks.

Top Entrepreneur Challenges #6: Being Lonely

The entrepreneur world can be a lonely world at times. When working a regular job, there are normally other employees and people around you but as an entrepreneur, you most likely will be alone a lot of the time.

It is important that you do take time to spend with friends and family. Get out and socialize and Facebook doesn’t count.

Top Entrepreneur Challenges #7: Taxes

This can be a huge challenge because as an employee, your employer just automatically deducted taxes. You will want to save any, and all receipts and I suggest having a separate account where you simply deposit a percentage of your revenues to cover tax payments.

Earlier, I mentioned the Expense Tracker. Many of the users have stated how much it has helped them with their taxes.

I do recommend that you contract an accountant too.

Top Entrepreneur Challenges #8: Fear

When an entrepreneur tells me they have no fear, I have a difficult time believing them. If they said they will show no fear, that is more believable. We all feel some fear, but it is all how we handle that fear. If we let it hold us back, it has control. If we move forward in the face of fear, we have the control.

Who will have the control in your entrepreneur dream?

Conclusion

In looking at my entrepreneur path as well as many others, these ARE the top 8 challenges. But we can look at challenges in a fun and exciting way… It is something to overcome just like the hurdle in a track race or the defense in a football game.

The successful entrepreneur looks at challenges as a normal part of the business. They rise up and above and overcome the challenge.

I know you have the ability in you or you would not be reading this post, so rise above the challenges and go out and live the entrepreneur dream.

As I say: Make The Rest Of Your Life The Best Of Your Life. You can find out how to do that right here.

So what challenges are you facing? Are there any not listed here that I may be able to give you some help with? Just leave a comment and I will give an answer.

The Education You Need To Become An Entrepreneur

I have had young people what education they need to become an entrepreneur. While I don’t ever like to tell a young person they do not have to go to college (which I won’t unless their parents say I can or should), the fact remains that a person with even a 3rd grade education could be a successful entrepreneur.

But, a good measurement is to examine some of the world’s top entrepreneurs and see what they had on the level of education.

Bill Gates Education

The co-founder of Microsoft attended Harvard for 2 years and left before graduating and proceeded to develop Microsoft.

Richard Branson Education

Sir Richard is the founder of Virgin Group. He was a terrible student in younger years and he had dyslexia. His Headmaster told him he would either go to prison or become a millionaire.

Larry Page Education

The co-founder of Google attended the University of Michigan and graduated with a BS in computer engineering. He then gained a Master of Science in computer science from Stanford.

Henry Ford Education

Henry was the founder of the Ford Motor Company. I am not sure just how far he got in regular school, but he never attended college.

Sam Walton Education

We know him as the entrepreneur who established Walmart. Sam attended the University of Missouri as an ROTC cadet. He joined the Army during World War II.

As you can see, these entrepreneurs had a wide variety of education. I would wager that if we were able to ask any of them if an entrepreneur needs education, they would probably say yes, but self-education in the areas that will help you in your entrepreneur goals.

With that, I would like to share some free or low cost means of self-educating yourself to give you an extra advantage in your goals of becoming a successful entrepreneur.

I am going to list several education courses and books you should consider.

Education Course: New Venture Finance: Startup Funding for Entrepreneurs

This course was created by the University of Maryland and can be a great way to learn methods of getting funding towards your entrepreneur dream.

Education Book: The Power Of Broke by Daymond John

Learn from the founder of Fubu how a startup with very little resources can be an advantage for you. Many entrepreneurs have little to start, and you can still make it big starting with very little.

The Power of Broke: How Empty Pockets, a Tight Budget, and a Hunger for Success Can Become Your Greatest Competitive Advantage

Education Course: Foundations of Business Strategy

This is an excellent course that is free. It is taught by Michael Lenox.

If you are still in school and wondering what classes will help you the most

If you are still in school and you wonder what would be the best classes to take to help you in your entrepreneur journey, I suggest:

  • Accounting
  • Marketing
  • Economics
  • Public Speaking
  • Writing
  • Computer Science

All of these will help you substantially.

Conclusion

One thing I have learned about education as an entrepreneur is: never stop learning. No matter what, try to learn something new each and every day. Read books, watch videos, attend webinars and public speaking events.

You can never learn too much and even if it seems that what you are learning may not help you, trust me, you will use it at some point in time.

20 Entrepreneur Success Signs

Over the years, I have watched many entrepreneurs struggle. In nearly every case, I could view several things about that particular entrepreneur and be able to predict if he/she would be a success. I also looked at my own entrepreneur road and this helped me understand many of the success signs that entrepreneurs possess. A sign of success is not measured in the amount of failures… Actually, most highly successful entrepreneurs failed uncountable times before they found the successful equation.

Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.” Denis Waitley

Here are 20 signs you just may be on the road to success as an entrepreneur.

#1 Sign Of Success: You Like Yourself

When you look in the mirror every morning, you like what you see. I am not saying you are “full of yourself,” but you do love yourself and what you have become.

#2 Sign Of Success: You Like Seeing Other People Succeed

Many people just cannot stand to see people succeed but entrepreneurs that are geared for success do like seeing other people succeed.

#3 Sign Of Success: You Get Motivation From Within

You are your master. Only you have the master keys to open the inner locks.” Amit Ray

Successful entrepreneurs look inside their inner being for motivation. They know they cannot depend on outer sources.

#4 Sign Of Success: You Have An Abundant Supply Of Haters

As I mentioned in #2, there are many people that just cannot stand seeing people succeed. If you are on the road of success, you will gain your fair share of haters.

#5 Sign Of Success: You Recognize Your Strengths And Your Weaknesses

Not only do you know your strengths, you build on them. With your weaknesses, you seek help from those you know are strong in that area.

#6 Sign Of Success: You Are Addicted To Knowledge

When I see a person who just cannot stop learning; be it from reading, asking questions or any other way they can learn something new, I know they are destined for success.

#7 Sign Of Success: You Are Able To View Situations From Various Angles

Look at situations from all angles, and you will become more open.” Dalai Lama

By mastering the art of looking at situations from many perspectives, you find yourself making the wisest decisions.

#8 Sign Of Success: You Embrace Change

Change can be difficult and sometimes chaotic but without change, nothing ever really moves forward. You realize this and embrace change.

#9 Sign Of Success: You Take Care Of Your Physical Self

You know that you only have 1 mind and 1 body and you must take care of them to be a success as an entrepreneur. You eat properly, sleep properly and exercise.

#10 Sign Of Success: You Want To Change The World

You realize that you have talents and skills that can make a difference. You have a desire to make a change in the world.

#11 Sign Of Success: You Are Humble

This speaks for itself; you will give the credit to others.

#12 Sign Of Success: You Set Goals

Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” Tony Robbins

I have never met a successful entrepreneur that did not set goals and objectives to reach those goals.

#13 Sign Of Success: You Say “Why Not Me” Instead of “Why Me?”

You believe you can do anything if you set your mind and heart to it. Can’t is not a word in your vocabulary.

#14 Sign Of Success: You Are Focused On Positives

This follows right in line with #13. You are always on the positive side of the fence and you will not run with the negatives.

#15 Sign Of Success: You Ask Questions

The only true way to find answers is by asking the proper questions. Successful entrepreneurs know that by asking questions, they will discover the answers they need.

#16 Sign Of Success: You Follow Your Intuition

Even when other people are saying something won’t work, if your intuition… your gut, says it will work, you will go with the gut before you do the people.

#17 Sign Of Success: You Do Not Fear Failure

Fear of failure is fiction, face this fact and fear will fall.” Amit Kalantri

Why fear the inevitable? To reach the pinnacle of success, you will have to step on or over many stones of failure.

#18 Sign Of Success: You Have Empathy

By being able to put yourself in the shoes of another person, you can accurately judge their intentions. Entrepreneurs need this attribute.

#19 Sign Of Success: You Use Your Time Wisely

Successful entrepreneurs know that time is just as valuable as gold or silver. How they use their time determines if they will gain success.

#20 Sign Of Success: You Consistently Plan

As an entrepreneur, you know that the only way to success is by following a plan. You plan each day, week and year and follow the plan.

I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game’s winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that’s why I succeed.” Michael Jordan

Do you have any of these signs?

If you have some of these signs, you are destined to success as an entrepreneur.

I have faith in you but the most important thing is: you must have faith in yourself.

7 Marketing Strategies That Work

What good is your idea if it isn’t directly in front of the people who will buy it? That is what marketing is all about. But some marketing strategies are costly… much too costly for us entrepreneurs.

  • A billboard – Around $10,000 for 4 weeks
  • A national television commercial – 30 seconds for $300,000+
  • You could possibly run a radio ad for $1,000 or so

Those marketing strategies do work, but you need high profit product to make the investment worth your time.

Most entrepreneurs just do not have that kind of marketing budget, so let me share 7 lower cost marketing strategies that do work.

Marketing Strategies #1: Press Release

The media can be your marketing friend at a low cost if done properly. A press release written that describes your why, and what problem you are solving can get into the hands of many journalists and displayed on a lot of media locations.

Costs for a press release are minimal. Unless you know how to write a quality press release yourself, I suggest contracting a freelance press release writer. (if you don’t know any, message me and I will share 1 with you).

There is some cost in a press release service that will get it in the hands of the journalists, but that is quite low too.

Marketing Strategies #2: Social Media

If you are not marketing on various social media channels, you are missing out on a lot of potential profits.

While you can advertise at a cost on social media, you can also market for free or for very little cost.

Facebook

Create a Facebook fan page around you or your brand. Post educational material with a call to action of visiting your landing page.

Twitter

Why not set up a free giveaway on Twitter? You will have Tweeters flocking to see what it is all about. What better way to get your product in front of many potential customers quickly.

Linkedin

You can set up a professional Linkedin page and even write educational posts on Linkedin Pulse. Again, have a call to action leading back to a sales page or your website/blog.

Pinterest

Pinterest is a great social site where you should show images of your product and link them back to the location a person can purchase.

Other Social Media Strategic Marketing

Don’t neglect the lesser known and used social media sites either. Sites such as:

  • Instagram
  • Flipboard
  • Digg
  • etc…

Can also provide a great marketing means to sell your products or services.

Marketing Strategies #3: Optimize

Maybe you have a fantastic website and blog. Maybe you are all over social media, but it seems that people are not finding you.

Your problem is probably SEO – Search Engine Optimization

Let’s just say that you developed a titanium wallet that will talk to you instead of having to open it. (wow, did I just come up with a great idea?)

So you have blog posts written about your wallet and a website that cost you $3,000 in development processes. But you are not getting many visitors from the search engines.

Let’s look at your keywords:

  • titanium wallet
  • metal wallet
  • talking wallet
  • wallets

While these keywords should all be left in place, you will want to have more that will be accessed:

  • bulletproof titanium money wallet
  • talking bulletproof wallet
  • theft and bullet safe wallet
  • etc…

Do you see my point? There are many experts in SEO that can help your website been seen by more people. The cost is normally minimal.

Marketing Strategies #4: Post Cards

While all the other entrepreneurs are email marketing, why not look back to the original mail system. No, you don’t have to buy a pony and start riding the Wild West, but creating postcards and buying stamps is a tremendous marketing strategy that does work.

So many people do not even open emails, but nearly everyone looks at the mail sent to them via the United States Postal Service.

You could put a picture of your product and a short reason why your product can help the person. Leave a method where they can purchase and watch the profits roll in.

Marketing Strategies #5: Hook Up With Other Entrepreneurs

Let’s stick with the titanium talking wallets. You know an entrepreneur who sells leather belts and handbags. Why not work together? You offer his goods and he shows your wallets. Everyone wins!

Marketing Strategies #6: Reviews and Testimonials

Find the reviewers who are well accepted. Send them a free product in exchange for an unbiased product review. Yes, you do chance a bad review, but that is a chance worth taking.

You can also ask customers for a testimonial and offer them a discount on their next purchase.

Marketing Strategies #7: Create YouTube Videos

A short and simple video about the strength of titanium with a little metal wallet talking to the viewers during the video is bound to gain huge attention… and sales.

These are just a few great marketing strategies that do work

Give them a try.

And come back and tell us the success it garnered.

Well, I need to go to the lab and work on my new wallet idea. I don’t see where there is one yet. If you want to pre-order, just leave a comment below.
